"Neo Utopia"
Berlin based graphic designer SUPERBLAST was immersed in the world of punk rock and skate- boarding when he discovered graffiti in 1990 and quickly became addicted to the energy and vitality of the street art underground. As a logical evolution of writing with spraypaint, he started a career as graphic designer in 1999. While studying graphic design, he freelanced for several urban brands, had solo and collective art shows. In 2004 he honed his skills in the beautiful craft of creating letters, by attending lessons in Fontdesign from the world- famous Luc(as) de Groot. His unique iconic style and use of color in illustrations, lettering and wall pieces lead him to projects with some of the most interesting and innovative artists and companies in his field. Most notable are his collaborations with Playstation Portable, Ecko Unltd, Volkl Skateboards, Montana Cans, and many more. SUPERBLAST has designed clothing, graphics, magazine ads, and
skateboard decks. Neo Utopia –The Art & Work of Superblast is a fascinating career retrospective from a pioneer of the European graffiti world. Included is a personal selection of graphic design work, graffiti, illustration, ad campaigns, logo design, typography and related art of the past 17 years as well as sketches and full color photos of work in progress.
THE BOARDSthat mean the world “Coming out of the skate culture and being a graphic artist there is no better thing as seeing your artwork on a deck in use”. It´s not justthenewcleanboardoutof theboxthat i´m thinking of. The run down old piece of wood on wheels with all it signs of decay has his own beauty. For me there are similarities between the heavily
used board and a piece on a wall. The older it gets the more you can read the history in or on it. On the wall there would be tags, posters or other paint covering the layers. On the deck you can see railslides, kickflips, nose taps, stickers and a bunch of other traces before it´s retirement.
This creates a more lively character to the item. And i like to create things that have this feel and idea behind it already, before it´s send out in the world to get a individual edge with the time. Giving the design a history of it´s own. Not just a vintage look. Also a atmosphere and memory of a diffrent time. Which doesn´t had to exist or existed at all. When Alex from Carrot Skateboards asked me to do some graphics for his little brand there was no question to support his company. It´s the firstand onlySkatebrand from Serbia. But they also collaborated with artists like Dalek and other nice people... so it was not to difficult to decide. We made 4 tshirts in different colorways and 2 nice decks in my icon style. The shape of a board already gives me the idea of a church window. So it fitted the 2 icons very well. Then i just needed to fill it up with all kind of psychodelicpatternsfor your personal eyestrain and off we go. Let´s call them: “the holy-masked-third-eye-cat-in-blue-smiles-because-you-don´t-know-where-his hands-are” and the other one could be: “the infinite-third-eye-skull-man-seeing-through-the-spraycaps-a-reflection-of-himself-and-smiles-so-hard-that-he-lost-a-tooth” or
something comletely different. If i hadn ́t destroyed up my knees around the age of 18, i propably would have skated ever since. But now i´m lucky to create at least some art on these wooden vehicles that did accompany me through a
very important time in my life. Still there isn´t any sport today that could give me the same exitementi
had then.
